Program: Generative AI, SALI, and the Legal Industry

Speakers:

  • Damien Riehl (SALI Alliance, Fastcase)
  • Saskia Mehlhorn (Norton Rose Fulbright)
  • Greg Lambert (Jackson Walker)

This session will touch on the development of new legal data standards and the interplay between these standards and generative AI technologies (such as GPT). Following this, our panel of expert speakers will provide a breakdown of what the introduction of generative AI might mean for the legal industry as a whole.

Damien Riehl is a lawyer and technologist with experience in complex litigation, digital forensics, and software development. A coder since 1985 and for the web since 1995, Damien clerked for the chief judges of state and federal courts, practiced in complex litigation for over a decade, has led teams of cybersecurity and world-spanning digital forensics investigations, and has led teams in legal-software development. An appointee of the Minnesota Governor’s Council on Connected and Automated Vehicles, he has helped recommend changes to Minnesota statutes, rules, and policies — all related to connected and autonomous vehicles. The Minnesota State Bar Association has also appointed Damien to Chair the state's working group on AI and the Unauthorized Practice of Law (UPL). At SALI, the legal data standard, Damien develops and has greatly expanded the taxonomy of over 10,000 legal tags that matter, helping the legal industry's development of AI, analytics, and interoperability. At Fastcase, Damien helps lead the design, development, and expansion of Fastcase's various products, integrating AI-backed technologies (e.g., GPT) to improve legal workflows and to power legal data analytics.

Saskia Mehlhorn is the Director, Knowledge and Research Services at Norton Rose Fulbright, US LLP.  Saskia has presented on an international, national and local level on topics like artificial intelligence, knowledge management and international arbitration. Saskia received her law degree from the University of Hamburg, Germany, and practiced law in Hannover, Germany, before accepting a position in the QHSE department of a major oilfield service company. Saskia also holds a LL.M. from the University of Houston and an MLIS from the University of North Texas.

Greg Lambert is the Chief Knowledge Services Officer at Jackson Walker. He is a former AALL President and still engages in volunteer work with the association. Greg co-founded Three Geeks and A Law Blog and The Geek in Review Podcast where he highlights legal technology, innovation, and creativity in the legal industry.
