Program: Patron Privacy in the Law Library - A Practical Workshop

Speaker: Cindy Fisher, Texas State Library and Archives Commission

As library workers we know the importance of being thoughtful about how our privacy, data collection and surveillance policies impact users, but it can be hard to keep up with the all the changes taking place. This short presentation will provide an overview of resources, tools, and frameworks to use when working with patrons and creating policies and procedures that center the user’s privacy rights.

Cindy Fisher has worked at the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) since 2016, building the capacity of rural libraries across Texas. She trains and consults with libraries through a variety of technology programs including You Can Do I.T., Library Technology Academy, and now Texas Digital Navigators. She has also built partnerships with state and national partners in non-profits and philanthropy.  Her main areas of focus are user experience, digital skills and digital equity, patron privacy and confidentiality, and developing library staff to teach.

Previously to this, Cindy worked at the University of Texas at Austin as a Learning Technologies Librarian where she consulted with faculty to integrate information literacy into the freshman core curriculum and developed a program to support library staff to incorporate learning technologies in their work. While there, she opened and managed the UT Libraries first multimedia lab.
